What is FTP?
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It is a system used by computers on the internet to move files between two individual computers. For example in the the case of Speedy.uk.net: the files are the pages and images of your website and the computers are yours and our server.
What is a web server?
A web server is a computer connected permanently to the internet, which runs a program to server web pages out to web browsers. These computers are typically very powerful with very fast network connections.
What is an FTP server?
An FTP server is a computer which runs an FTP server. In the context of Speedy.uk.net, it can be considered as the same system as the web server as in this case, the FTP server is there only to allow files to be placed onto the web server.
Uploading Webpages
Please see the support pages where this is discussed in detail.
Downloading Webpages
Again please see the support pages but refer only to the guides for the FTP clients; WebPlus9 does not have the ability to download files.
What happens when the trail period is up?
At the end of the 30 day trail period, you will be sent an email to the address you gave when signing up. This email will contain the details required to upgrade to a starter account. Your website will be held in a holding state until you upgrade. You will not be able to view it online or access it by FTP. If you do not renew within 30 days your account will be removed.
How do I cancel my account?
If you have bought a hosting package, your account will expire after the twelve month contract is up. If you do not wish to continue using Speedy web hosting, then simply do not upgrade your account.
What happens at the end of 12 months?
When you buy a hosting package, you pay for 12 months in advance. Near the end of this period you will be sent a reminder email to renew your account. Details on how to do this are contained within the email. Once payment is received, another 12 months will be added to your account from the expiry date of your previous hosting agreement.
Excessive Traffic
As defined by the Service Level Agreement, excessive traffic to your webpages may result in them being suspended. Excessive traffic is most likely to occur only in cases of abuse, as defined by the Terms and Conditions of service.
How can I write a webpage?
This is a large topic, beyond the scope of this guide apart from a few pointers. The easiest option is to use a software package which helps you by handling the technical aspects of the webpage for you. One such package is Serif WebPlus 9. In general, a webpage is created from HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language). This can be written by hand, and there are many good books available which explain it in great detail.
Why can't I access the domain name I've bought?
A domain name (e.g. www.my_webpages.co.uk) will take anything up to 48 hours to become available after purchase. This is because it takes some time for the registered name to propagate over the internet. In the mean time, you can access your webpage via www.my_webpages.speed.uk.net. These names are handled by Speedy.uk.net, and do not need to propagate in the same way as .co.uk names do.
How do I have more than one website in my webspace?
You can create subdirectories within your web space and place each of your sites within these. To then refer to each site separately, give the address out as http://www.yourspeedyaccount.speedy.uk.net/website/. You can't have a different website for each domain in one account. To have more than one website under its own domain, you need more than one hosting package.
Why does my FTP keep disconnecting / timing out?
Not connecting to either your mail or FTP is sometimes due to a new version of Norton Firewall. The way to solve this is to first disable your firewall and then re-enable it again. If your are unsure on how to do this please refer to Norton Firewall documentation.
Why do both of my website address' show the same website?
If you have uploaded both of your websites and you discover that the websites both show same site, then you need to purchase another hosting package. This is because both of your domains are pointing to the same site. Buying a new website address is not the same as buying another user account / hosting package.
To have a different website on each website address, you would need to have two website hosting packages. Please See: http://www.speedy.uk.net/support/faq.php#MoreThanOne
How do I read my Email?
There are two ways to do this: either log in to the Speedy Portal or download the messages to your computer using an email client. Please see the support pages where the set up of Microsoft Outlook is discussed in detail.
I have uploaded some changes to my web site page but the page still looks the same. What's wrong?
Sometimes an Internet browser will store your web site page in it's memory so that the next time you look at that page it loads quicker.
To clear the cached memory you need to do the following; While on the web site page you want to clear the cache for, hold down the 'Ctrl' key on you keyboard and then press 'F5'.
What domains can I register my website under?
When you buy a hosting package you can register a domain under .com, .co.uk, .me.uk, .org or .net.
Can I run my own programs on the server (CGI, PHP, etc.)?
Sorry, but the standard Speedy.uk.net packages do not support this. We do however have other packages available with full support for all web technologies. Please contact us to discuss these packages.
How can I view statistics on the users of my website?
While it isn't possible to put a name to every visitor, you can see how many you get by adding Web Stats to your account for just £10!
With Web Stats you can view how many users have viewed your site, what pages they have looked at, which search engines users have come from and much, much more.
To access Web Stats, open the portal as described above and click, on the first page, the link next to "Web Stats". If this is disabled, you can add it to your account by clicking "Renew or Upgrade" then "Upgrade".
How do I add a counter to the front of my website?
To add a simple counter to your homepage, try one of the following:
* http://freelogs.com/
* http://www.123counters.com/
* http://easy-hit-counters.com/
These counters do not show who is visiting, but do give a simple number which increases each time your website is loaded or refreshed by a visitor. For proper statistics we recommend the Web Stats add-on, which runs by actually analysing the server's logs.
How do I control my account and read my webmail?
Log on to the Speedy.uk.net Portal at http://portal.speedy.uk.net with the user name and password you used to gave when creating your account. There are links to the portal on every Speedy.uk.net page, near the top labeled"Registered Users Login". This control panel gives information on your account and allows you to do other things such as upgrade your account, edit your contact details, add and remove mailboxes if you have more than one, manage extra domains, read your email and view your web statistics.
I have a Hosting Package and my email appears to be anything@mydomain.co.uk, how do I change this?
The 'anything' bit actually isn't the real address, it refers to a catch-all address. You receive everything which comes in to your domain. For example, you can use bob@mydomain.co.uk, bobby@mydomain.co.uk and robert@mydomain.co.uk at the same time. These all come in to a single mailbox. If you want to separate out the email into different mailboxes, then you can add mailboxes to your account and define specific names before the @ which match specific mailboxes.
