Uploading Your Webpages with Cute FTP

An FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client is used to transfer files to and from your web space.

If you don’t have one you can download the popular client Cute FTP from http://www.cuteftp.com/. There are many other FTP programs available.

This guide explains Cute FTP in detail, but with care the same instructions can be applied to other programs.

Using the Wizard

After installing Cute FTP, it will open a 'wizard' which will help you to configure the program. This first window of the wizard prompts you for a name. Enter something here which will remind you which web server this is for, such as "My Speedy.uk.net Webpage".

Clicking "Next >", Cute FTP will prompt you for the address of our server. This is ftp.speedy.uk.net - enter this, then again click Next.

Next you are asked for your user name and password. These are the same as those you gave when registering with this website. Enter these and then click Next.

Next you are asked for some defaults to use when you start Cute FTP. The first, Default Local Folder should be set to the location where you hold your webpage on your computer. The button just to the right will pop open a file lister which allows you to easily find your file's directory.

For the Default Remote Folder, leave this blank. This is the location on the webserver where your files will be placed. For a basic website, this will put your files and directories in the bottom level of the webserver.

Click Next, then in the next window click Finish. That's it - Cute FTP is ready.

Using Cute FTP

When next starting Cute FTP, choose your connection from the File menu. You'll see a window like that below:

In order to copy your files to the webserver, drag them with the mouse from the left list to the right lister. The left-most representing the files on your computer and the right the files on the web server. Anything you can see on the right is available to anyone via the Internet.
